WIRE โ€” Nico Group has expressed satisfaction with Ascent Soccer Academy's achievements during its recent European tour. The company's Group Head of Marketing and Customer Experience, Taweni Gondwe Xaba, said this after the team returned from Sweden and Iceland yesterday. She said Ascent's achievements represented success for the country as a whole. "The achievements prove that the future of Malawian football is bright and in capable hands. You have shown every young boy and girl across the country that no dream is too big when talent meets discipline, hard work and opportunity," she said. Gondwe Xaba said Nico was pleased that its partnership with Ascent had already started producing results. "As Nico Group, we do not take these accomplishments lightly. When we partnered with Ascent Soccer Academy, we invested in a vision of transforming lives through sport and creating opportunities for young people to shine on the global stage. You have reaffirmed that this vision is becoming a reality," she said. Ascent director Mark Swerk said the tour provided valuable exposure for the players. "We are happy with the performance of the teams. They represented Malawi very well," he said. Boys' captain Favour Mwiba said the European trip was an eye-opener. Ascent Under-14 boys won the 2026 Rey Cup after beating Selfoss 2-0 at Iceland National Stadium last month. The Under-16 girls finished second after losing 4-0 to Bayern Munich at the same venue. Ascent also participated in the Gothia Cup in Sweden. The academy signed a three-year sponsorship deal worth K900 million with Nico Group last month.
