Nomads eye clean sweep

FDH Bank Premiership defending champions Mighty Wanderers have set their sights on winning all domestic trophies that are on offer this season. Wanderers Director of Football David Kanyenda outlined the club's ambitions on Tuesday after presenting sports equipment worth K100 million to the club's four teams —the main team, reserve team, women's team, and youth team. Kanyenda said the Nomads had what it takes to win all the trophies this season. "Our target is always to win every silverware that is available. We want to win every competition. I think we cannot set low standards for ourselves," Kanyenda said. Currently, the Nomads are leading the FDH Bank Premiership with 22 points from 11 matches, above second-placed Silver Strikers and third-placed Blue Eagles on goal difference. Wanderers are also in the Airtel Top 8 Cup semi-finals and are scheduled to face Eagles at Silver Stadium in Lilongwe City this coming Sunday. Kanyenda said the Nomads would not relax in their mission to win the all the domestic trophies. "We want to do well and have already started [the season] well. We have won the Charity Shield Cup, we are in the semi-finals of the Airtel Top 8 Cup and are leading the league table — though we are not happy because it is only on goal difference. We wish we were leading by three or six points," Kanyenda said. Wanderers Coach Bob Mpinganjira echoed Kanyenda's sentiments. "We want to do well. The president [Thomson Mpinganjira] is supporting us; we just have to prepare well for our matches for our ambitions to be fulfilled. We need to work hard. Other teams will also come hard on us," Mpinganjira said. Meanwhile, Kanyenda has said the club is determined to go beyond the Caf Champions League preliminary round this year. "This time, we want to qualify and go all the way to the group stages. We want to eliminate our next two opponents," he said. The team participated in the Caf Confederation Cup last year but was eliminated in the first preliminary round by Jwaneng Galaxy of Botswana after suffering a 7-6 loss on post-match penalties after the matches ended 1-1 on aggregate. Wanderers will be Malawi's sole representative in the Caf inter-club competitions this year after both FCB Nyasa Big Bullets and Silver decided against taking part.
