Malawi rises to strengthen global heritage cooperation

Malawi has reaffirmed its commitment to the protection, conservation and promotion of its outstanding cultural and natural heritage. The country did so by participating in the 48th Session of the Unesco World Heritage Committee held in Busan, Republic of Korea. Director of Museums and Monuments Potiphar Kaliba, accompanied by National Focal Point for Unesco World Heritage Convention Oris Malijani, said their participation placed Malawi among State parties from across the globe deliberating on matters relating to the conservation, management and sustainable use of World Heritage properties. The World Heritage Committee is Unesco's premier decision-making body responsible for implementing the 1972 Convention concerning the Protection of World Cultural and Natural Heritage. "The annual session provides a platform for governments, heritage professionals, conservation experts and development partners to exchange experiences, review the state of conservation of World Heritage properties, examine nominations and strengthen international cooperation," Kaliba said. He said Malawi's participation in the session provided an invaluable opportunity to engage with global experts on emerging issues affecting World Heritage, including climate change, sustainable tourism, disaster risk management, community participation and digital heritage documentation. "The session also looked at innovative approaches to safeguarding cultural and natural resources. The forum also enabled the delegation to strengthen partnerships with Unesco and other players," Kaliba said. Malawi has three Unesco World Heritage sites that represent the country's exceptional natural and cultural values and they include Lake Malawi National Park, which was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1984. Others are Mulanje Mountain Cultural Landscape and Chongoni Rock Art Area. Meanwhile, Kaliba has said progress has been made in developing the nomination dossier for Khulubvi and Associated Mbona Rain Shrines Cultural Landscape as well as advancing preparations for the nomination of Nyika-Vwaza Landscape.
