'I am still the same Mlaka'

Veteran musician Mlaka Maliro opened up Thursday that he still remains the same musician that they have followed since his early years of Dzanja Lalemba and Maloto albums. The artist comes out as he has put on the market his first single 'Ana A Eli' this year as he gears to release his fourth album. Some quarters have in recent times claimed that the artist has lost steam following his alignment to politics including dropping songs supporting the previous regime. But he said yesterday he remains Mlaka ndi Mlaka as his longtime signature and attributed his political affiliation to work. "For me, composing songs for political parties is just work. I have been active in the music business for close to 27 years now and so, I do that just to make ends meet just like anyone else," he said. Mlaka said if he was into politics, he would have gone on a podium to announce his membership for a party. "Politics is what is driving nations and so, you cannot be left out and this is why people make choices to vote for leaders of their choice. Why do people hate artists when they work for parties and yet they support different teams for instance," asked the artist. On his new track 'Ana a Eli', Mlaka said he derives most of his messages in the Bible and that he has done the same this time. "I am not targeting anyone and I am not attacking anyone, I am just giving advice. He who the cap fits can take hid of the message. Music is a vehicle for disseminating important messages apart from entertainment," he said. Mlaka, who has several awards to his credit, said he will continue to use music to give advice wherever necessary and even question those that suppress others as well as steal from the poor. "Love needs to exist among us. I call upon people to listen to the song carefully and understand the message and for me, music is that which entertains and at the same time brings about change," he said. His song has also not drifted away from his style. "Times have changed where different genres have come up but I will walk with the same pace and style. This is what people recognise me for," he said.
