Queens challenged to reclaim elite status

Four business leaders—Rhodrick Kalumpha, Abdul Chazolokera Chirwa, Sheriff Kaunde, Managing Partner at Liberty Immigration Services as well as Managing Director for Dusk Commercials Ltd Saidi Phiri—also donated K5 million to the team in support of Malawi's sporting excellence. Speaking at Platt Sports Centre in Manchester, where the Queens were training after a practice match against New Zealand, Phiri said the contribution reflected the group's commitment to investing in Malawi sport. "Malawi has proved before that it belongs among the world's top netball-playing nations, and we believe this team has what it takes to restore that status," he said. The former Silver Ferns goal defender and assistant coach said she had a clear picture of combinations which are working well for her side. The high-performance consultant said her side had the strategies, speed and dynamism to compete against the best. "I think injuries and illnesses are something that will be constant throughout every team in this competition. But the area we need to address is accuracy. "Netball is a precision game; so, you need timing and decision making. We are still not quite there yet; we are still integrating Mwawi [Kumwenda] into the team," she said. Malawi will open the Commonwealth Games campaign against South Africa on July 25 before facing Northern Ireland a day later. The Queens will then take on hosts England on July 27 before completing their group fixtures against Australia and Tonga in matches that are scheduled for consecutive days.
