WIRE โ Mighty Wanderers seek to reclaim top spot when they face Civil Service United at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe this afternoon. The two teams go into the battle after contrasting fortunes in the Airtel Top 8 last week. Wanderers progressed to the semi-finals after a 3-1 victory on aggregate over Creck Sporting Club whereas Civil exited the competition on an away goal-rule following a 1-1 draw on aggregate against Blue Eagles. This afternoon, the Nomads have a chance to reclaim top spot if they beat Civil. Currently, Wanderers are third with 18 points from nine matches, one behind leaders Blue Eagles and second-placed FCB Nyasa Big Bullets. Both Eagles and Bullets will be in action Sunday. On the other hand, Civil are on position 10 with 11 points from the same number of matches. Wanderers have only lost once in the league this season. That loss was a 2-1 defeat at the hands of rivals Bullets in the official launch match at Bingu National Stadium in the capital city. For Civil, they have lost four matches in the league this season. Their last league defeat was a 1-0 loss to Red Lions at Zomba Stadium on July 5, 2026. Head to head record between the two sides favours the Nomads. Wanderers are undefeated against Civil in the league since 2023. Last season, Wanderers and Civil shared the spoils after a goal-less stalemate at the same venue but the Nomads triumphed 1-0 at Kamuzu Stadium in the second round. In 2024, Wanderers won 1-0 at Civo Stadium. Civil assistant coach Emmanuel Zoya said his team was not intimidated by Wanderers. "We expect a tough match but we can match them [Wanderers]. We will fight to get all the three points," Zoya said. The hosts will be without captain Righteous Banda due to suspension. Civil have assembled a good side despite losing several key players at the end of last season. Wanderers coach Bob Mpinganjira admitted that Civil are always a tough nut to crack especially at home. "It is everyone's hope that we get on top but we will not force things. We will take the games as they come. One game at a time. This time around we are playing Civil. We will fight for a win, definitely we are going there for fight for three points," Mpinganjira said. The Nomads have received a boost following the return of striker Lameck Mithi and goalkeeper Chancy Mtete. Captain Emmanuel Nyirenda, Isaac Kaliati and Blessings Mwalilino are all out due to injury. In other matches, Moyale Barracks will face Masters at Mzuzu Stadium whereas Creck will host Luanar Mitundu at Aubrey Dimba Stadium. Mafco will meet Red Lions at Chitowe Stadium.
