WIRE โ Football Association of Malawi (Fam) has refunded K16.274 million to football fans who purchased tickets to ย watch the cancelled 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifier between Malawi National Football Team and Equatorial Guinea at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe last year. This followed a ticket validation exercise conducted from June 2 to 4 2026. The incident happened on October 9 2025 after Equatorial Guinea's football federation informed Fam and Fifa that its team would not travel for their match due to undisclosed reasons. Fans learnt about the cancellation of the match fi ve hours before kickoff. In a statement released Thursday, Fam Marketing Manager Mayamiko Kafwamba said the ticket validation exercise confirmed 155 physical tickets with a total value of K930,000, whereas 1,517 online tickets worth K14,544,000 were also successfully validated. "In addition to refunding the value of the tickets, we also refunded K800,000 in transaction and money transfer charges incurred by supporters during the ticket purchasing process, ensuring that affected fans received the full amount they had paid," Kafwamba said. Kafwamba thanked all supporters for their patience, understanding and cooperation throughout the ticket validation and refund process. "We appreciate the inconvenience caused by the postponement of the match and remain committed to ensuring that our supporters are treated fairly whenever unforeseen circumstances affect scheduled fixtures," he said. Kafwamba further said fans that have not received their refunds will be paid after going through the same ticket validation process. According to Kafwamba, Fam learnt about the cancellation of the match on the scheduled match day. "We would like to clarify that we only learnt of the match cancellation on the scheduled match day. Immediately after receiving the official communication, we instructed all ticket selling outlets to stop selling tickets at around 11:00 hours to minimize further ticket sales and inconvenience to supporters," he said. Sports analyst Parry Chinyama said Fam should provide proof of the ticket refunds. "If this was done, then it is good. For the sake of transparency, we need to get proof of payments to authenticate this accession," he said. Fifa awarded Malawi three points and a 3-0 victory following Equatorial Guinea's no show. The win helped Malawi to finish fourth in Group H with 13 points.
