WIRE โ The European Union (EU) has approved a new โฌ143 million (about K283 billion) financing package for Malawi to support agricultural value chains, electricity infrastructure, secondary and vocational education and social protection programmes. GAZTELUMENDIโ The first pillar is agricultural value chains EU Ambassador to Malawi Daniel Aristi Gaztelumendi announced the funding in Lilongwe at a press briefing jointly organised by the EU Delegation and the Embassy of Ireland. Gaztelumendi said the newly approved package was endorsed in Brussels a few days ago and forms part of the broader Europe investment portfolio in Malawi. "Our bilateral EU development cooperation envelope in the country is around โฌ497 million. If you bring together what we call Team Europe, which is the whole European family, meaning the European Union, member states and European investment banks, the total investment reaches โฌ1.5 billion," he said. Gaztelumendi said the โฌ143 million package would be implemented under three priority areas. "The first pillar is agricultural value chains. The second is electricity transmission and generation. The third is secondary education, vocational education and training and social protection," Gaztelumendi said. Explaining the recent visit by a group of representatives of EU member states to Malawi, Irish Ambassador to Malawi Kate Brady said the visit was aimed at assessing how Europe-funded development programmes were being implemented on the ground. She said officials from the 27 EU member states spent three-and-a-half days in Malawi, where they met with government officials, development partners, non-governmental organisations and beneficiaries of EU-supported projects. "It is important for representatives of our member states to leave headquarters and come to countries like Malawi to see how our projects and instruments are working, to speak to beneficiaries and understand how we can improve the way we deliver development cooperation [projects]," Brady said.
