WIRE โ By Justine Mkweu: The United Kingdom (UK) Government has indicated that Official Development Assistance (ODA) to Malawi will be cut by 90 percent between this year and 2029. The announcement has been made by the government's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office in its annual report and accounts for 2025 to 2026. According to the annual report, in 2025-26, UK's bilateral support to Malawi was pegged at ยฃ50.2 million. However, in the 2026-27 period, it went down to ยฃ20 million. The UK Government projects that, in 2027-28, it will be dropped to ยฃ10 million and reduced further to ยฃ5 million in 2028-29. The annual report says this is in line with new UK development aid approach. Through ODA, the UK was helping Malawi in areas such as climate resilience, economic development and humanitarian assistance, among others. There was no immediate response from Malawi Government officials. Last month, at an event marking King Charles III's 77th birthday in Lilongwe, Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister George Chaponda hailed the strong and longstanding relations between Malawi and the UK. Speaking at the same event, British High Commissioner to Malawi Leigh Stubblefield demonstrated commitment towards strengthening relations between the two nations. The British envoy said her country shared common values with Malawi in promoting peace, democracy, human rights and respect for international law. "Multilateral cooperation remains key to addressing global challenges such as climate change, economic uncertainty and conflicts," she said.
