WIRE โ By Llywellenie Mpasa: Kukoma Babies were crowned champions of the Southern Region Mukuru Under-21 Netball Cup playoffs on Sunday after producing a dominant performance to defeat Giants Reserve 37-20 in the final. The final was hosted at Blantyre Sports Arena. The victory capped a successful two-day tournament for Kukoma Babies, who displayed consistency and determination throughout the competition to emerge as the best team in the Southern Region. The triumph also earned them a place, alongside runners-up Giants Reserve and third-placed Tigress Cubs, in the national finals. The three teams will now represent the Southern Region as they compete for national honours against the best sides from other regions. The tournament, organised by the Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) in partnership with Mukuru, attracted 12 teams from the Southern Region and gave young players the platform to showcase their talent as part of efforts to identify and develop future netball stars. Kukoma Babies Coach Jesca Mazengera Sanudi said the team was determined to win this year's competition after missing out on the inaugural title when they lost to Vanessa Sisters. "We came into this competition with a clear goal of winning the championship. "Last year, we missed out on the title but, this time around, the players were focused and committed to achieving success," she said. Kukoma Babies reached the final after defeating Tigress Cubs 42-26 in a thrilling semifinal encounter while Giants Reserve booked their place in the title decider after beating Pacers Future 30-20. Tigress Cubs secured third place and qualification for the national finals after defeating Pacers Future 30-10 in the playoff match. Mukuru Marketing and Partner Lead Taleetha Jussab said the sponsorship had created a strong platform for discovering raw talent and providing young players with a pathway to progress in netball.
