WIRE โ The debate surrounding multi-talented athlete Asimenye Simwaka's participation in two events has taken a new twist, with the Malawi Commonwealth Games Association (CGA) insisting that the athlete will compete in the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games before joining the Scorchers in Morocco. The Malawi Defence Force (MDF) soldier has been included in both Team Malawi, which is expected to compete in the Commonwealth Games in Scotland, and the Malawi Women's National Football Team, which is expected to participate in the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) finals in Morocco. Both events are clashing with the Commonwealth Games, which are running from July 23 to August 2, whereas the Scorchers will compete at the Wafcon finals in Morocco from July 25 to August 16. According to sources, Simwaka will miss the Scorchers' opening match against Nigeria's Falcons on July 28. However, the short and middle-distance athlete, who plays as an attacker in football, would be available for Malawi's matches against Egypt on August 1 and Zambia on August 5. STAR WITH TWO FACESโAsimenye, the athlete Malawi Commonwealth Games Association (CGA) Secretary General Henry Sakala said Simwaka was set to feature for Team Malawi during the Commonwealth Games in Scotland. "As far as we are concerned, Asimenye will first take part in the Commonwealth Games before other events. Mind you, Asimenye is in Portugal preparing for big events. "We are not blocking her but the first priority is on Commonwealth Games. We appreciate that she is a multi-talented athlete and that is why she will be released for another event when she completes her assignment in Scotland," Sakala said. Recently, on July 4, Asimenye won a gold medal in a 400-metre event at the Portuguese Open Championship, where she clocked a winning time of 53.20 seconds. Meanwhile, Football Association of Malawi Chief Executive Officer Abdul Chiwalo has said Asimenye was included in the squad following Scorchers' coach Lovemore Fazili's recommendations. "The coach included her because of her attributes. Therefore, we expect her to honour the call-up. "However, I need to liaise with Fazili to check on when she will be available for the Scorchers," Chiwalo said.
