WIRE โ State President Peter Mutharika and First Lady Getrude Mutharika have, through Beautify Malawi Trust (Beam), supported about 1,000 Malawians who arrived from South Africa on Monday. The First Couple has provided assorted items to the returnees. The items were presented to the people at Joyce Chitsulo Stadium in Mwanza District Monday. The repatriated Malawians are camping there as they wait to be processed to travel back to their respective homes. Beam Chairperson Dingiswayo Jere said the President and First Lady were concerned with the plight of those who have fled from South Africa, hence presenting items such as duvets, sugar, soap, soya pieces, orange juice and maize flour to them. Jere said this would help those who have been repatriated to have a safety net as they begin to rebuild their lives in their respective districts. "The First Lady knows that they have fled South Africa without anything and this support will ease the challenges they face," Jere said. Guest of honour at the event, Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet Justin Saidi, said the number of those who have been repatriated to Malawi has reached over 40,000. He advised those who are returning to South Africa using uncharted routes to refrain from doing so, saying the situation in that country remained hostile to foreigners. "Let them use the skills they have acquired to develop this country. "We, as government, pledge to continue giving them support," Saidi said. One of the returnees, Abdullah Braidon, said he would settle back home in Machinga District and rebuild his life. "We were chased out of our houses as landlords who have foreign tenants were being threatened," Abdula said. Beam has pegged the cost of the items at about K100 million.
