WIRE โ The Malawi Women's National Football Team, the Scorchers will depart for Morocco Monday morning for the 2026 TotalEnergies Women's Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) finals. The Scorchers will arrive in Morocco two weeks before their first match against the defending champions Nigeria on July 28. The tournament will run from July 25 to August 16. Scorchers coach Lovemore Fazili named a 23-member squad comprising of eight foreign country based players namely Tabitha Chawinga, Temwa Chawinga, Rose Kabzere, Faith Chimzimu, Sarah Mulimbika, Sabina Thom, Vanessa Chikupila and Chimwemwe Madise. Speaking after unveiling the squad in Lilongwe on Saturday, Fazili said Temwa and Simwaka are expected to join the squad in Morocco next week. "I expect Temwa to join the squad any day from July 17 to 23. She is available for the Wafcon and I have been looking forward to having her in the team as she is scoring regularly in USA and she is one of the important players to the team," Fazili said. The Scorchers go into this year's Wafcon finals on the back of poor showing in recent matches having lost three matches in four matches. Malawi lost 5-0 and 3-2 to Australia and India at the Fifa Women's Series in Nairobi, Kenya in April. They also lost 1-0 to Tanzania before a goalless stalemate to the Twiga Stars in Dar es Salaam in June. Fazili said the team was ready for its maiden appearance at the Wafcon. "We have had good preparations. For the past weeks, we were training under floodlights as we will play the games at night. We are happy that most of the players are used to playing at night," he said. In his 23-member final squad, Fazili has maintained a core of the team that has played together for more than five years. He has named three goalkeepers Mercy Sikelo, Esther Maulidi andYamikani Kaonga. The coach has also included Ireen Khumalo, Rose Alufandika, Bernadette Mkandawire, Madyina Ngulube, Chikondi Gondwe, Olivia Phikani, Deborah Henry and Tionge Phiri. Scorchers captain Tabitha said the girls are determined to write another piece of history. "We are going to Morocco to compete. We have a very good team. We can beat any team," Tabitha said. Malawi qualified for the Wafcon finals after beating Angola 2-0 on aggregate.
