WIRE — Mittawa Super League of Malawi (Sulom) president Gilbert Mittawa has thrown his weight behind incumbent Football Association of Malawi (Fam) president Fleetwood Haiya ahead of next year's elections. Speaking on local television station Luntha, Mittawa said Haiya had exceeded expectations in his first term and deserved another chance to lead Malawian football. "In a space of two years, he has done a lot. Even if someone wakes you up at 2am and asks who you would endorse as Fam president in 2027, you would still endorse Haiya," Mittawa said. Mittawa said his decision to endorse Haiya was made in his personal capacity and not as Sulom president. "Sulom is not Mittawa. It is a group of people elected by clubs to run football," he said. Recently, Mittawa said he would not seek re-election when Sulom goes to polls early next year. The Central Region Football Association, Northern Region Football Association, Eastern Region Football Association and Southern Region Football Association have already endorsed Haiya. Sports analyst Parry Chinyama said he was not surprised by the endorsement. "Endorsements are not nominations or votes. This happens in politics and should not scare or intimidate anyone willing to contest," Chinyama said. Haiya ended Walter Nyamilandu's 19-year reign as Fam president in December 2023.
