WIRE โ€” By Clara Ngwira, contributor The National Identity database could soon be used to strengthen Sim card verification and improve security of mobile communication services as the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) explore a digital identity overhaul. The discussions between the two institutions focused on potential areas of cooperation in digital identity management, artificial intelligence (AI), data protection and digital skills development. The two institutions also discussed the growing role of AI and the need to ensure that the adoption of AI technologies and digital identity systems is supported by strong data protection measures to protect citizens' privacy and rights. Digital skills development was another key area of discussion, with Macra and UNDP exploring possible programmes targeting secondary school learners. The initiative would complement ongoing interventions by Macra's Universal Service Fund (USF) to equip young people with skills needed to participate in the digital economy. "Partnerships such as this are critical in ensuring that digital technologies are deployed in a secure, inclusive and responsible manner. "As Macra, we are committed to strengthening collaboration with partners such as UNDP to support innovation, enhance digital skills and safeguard the rights of consumers in the digital space," Director General Mayamiko Nkoloma said. UNDP Digital Advisor in Malawi Azhar Saeed Malik said digital transformation efforts should be centred on people and built on trust and inclusion. "We look forward to working with Macra and other stakeholders to explore practical solutions that can strengthen digital identity systems, promote responsible use of AI and expand opportunities for young people to acquire relevant digital skills," Malik said.
