WIRE โ The Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) has summoned sports associations to review the performance of Malawi's national teams in international competitions. The two-day consultative meeting will take place at Kamuzu Institute for Sports in Lilongwe from today Thursday to tomorrow. This follows poor performances by national teams in recent competitions. Council public relations officer Edgar Mtulumbwa said the meeting will provide an opportunity for associations to assess recent performances, discuss challenges that affected results and propose strategies for improvement. He said the outcomes are expected to guide future interventions aimed at strengthening sports development structures and improving performance in regional, continental and global competitions. Mtulumbwa said discussions will focus on key areas such as athlete preparation, technical development, funding, access to competitions, governance and sports science. According to Mtulumbwa, council officials are today expected to separately meet representatives from Athletics Malawi (AM), Football Association of Malawi (Fam), Volleyball Association of Malawi (Vam), Boxing Federation of Malawi (BFM) and Darts Association of Malawi (Dam). Fam operations director Gomezgani Zakazaka welcomed the approach by the council. "We think there is more commitment towards the national teams from council. Firstly, it was the issue of funding where we have seen that funding for the national teams, especially football, has been increased significantly to K3 billion, which is really massive. "It is a very important platform where we can share challenges our national teams are facing face to face rather than through reports. We believe this is just the beginning," Zakazaka said. The meeting coincides with public outcry over the performances of the Malawi national football team, the Flames, and the Malawi national netball team, the Queens. The Flames are winless in five consecutive matches in all competitions, having lost to Zambia 9-8, Botswana 1-0 and Ethiopia 1-0 and 1-1. Malawi last beat Lesotho 1-0 in November last year. Similarly, the Queens delivered a disappointing showing during the Africa Netball Cup on home soil after finishing fourth in December last year. The team lost to Zimbabwe 48-44 at Griffin Saenda Stadium. Other sporting codes have also failed to meet expectations. Handball Association of Malawi (Ham), Cricket Malawi and Judo Association of Malawi are also expected to attend the meeting.
