WIRE — 24-hour walkout by Trenitalia and Trenord staff threatens travel chaos. Italy faces significant disruption to rail travel on Friday 24 July, when a 24-hour national strike affecting railway sector workers is scheduled to take place. The strike will run from 21.00 on Thursday 23 July until 21.00 on Friday 24 July, and will affect both regional and high-speed rail services operated by Trenitalia and Trenord. The nationwide walkout has been called by the grassroots trade unions SGB (Sindacato Generale di Base) and CUB (Confederazione Unitaria di Base). Possible delays, cancellations and changes to services may also occur outside the official strike window although minimum services will be guaranteed by law. Italo's high-speed services are not involved, following a recent strike by Italo staff. Commuters and travellers are advised to check with individual operators for updated timetables in the days before the strike.
