The Italian Navy's training ship Amerigo Vespucci, widely dubbed "the most beautiful ship in the world", has arrived in New York to mark the 250th anniversary celebrations of American independence. The iconic tall ship joins the Sail4th 250 flotilla, a major naval celebration in New York Harbour involving dozens of international sailing vessels, naval ships, aerial displays and waterfront events. The Sail4th programme began on Friday 3 July, with the main event scheduled on Saturday 4 July when the tall ships and naval vessels from around the world will sail from the Verrazzano Bridge to the George Washington Bridge, passing the Statue of Liberty. Orangisers describe the Sail4th 250 initiative as "the largest-ever flotilla of tall ships from around the world, creating a majestic nautical spectacle and an unforgettable once-in-a-generation event on land, sea, and air." North American tour The New York visit forms a highlight of the Amerigo Vespucci's North America campaign, an initiative of Italy's defence ministry and navy, produced by Difesa Servizi and developed with the foreign affairs and culture ministries. The voyage began in Genoa on 9 May, when the ship set off on a route taking in the Canary Islands and Baltimore before New York.
